We’re using flood predictive technology to improve Tennessee communities’ future responses to devastating flood events
The Mississippi River is West Tennessee’s blessing and curse. The river fuels the economy in the region, but it also makes the area prone to flooding during heavy rain events. In 2011, flooding caused by storms made the river crest at 48 feet (14.6 metres)—the second highest since record keeping began in 1937. As severe weather increases in frequency, increasing flood resilience will be essential for communities.
We’re doing that with Flood Predictor. It’s a digital solution built with machine learning and informed by over 30,000 hours of engineered flood modeling. It can produce accurate flood predictions in hours, whereas typical flood modeling efforts can take days or weeks.
Time is of the essence when flooding rain is in the forecast. Flood Predictor was implemented for the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) and utilized the state’s own flood data.
The engineering, data, and physics complexity built within Flood Predictor is immense, but the output is easily digestible. In West Tennessee, that means flood resilience decisions are made faster and smarter. And communities are safer during weather emergencies.
